The use of cold and superficial heat in the treatment of soft tissue injuries.

چکیده
Over the years there has been much confusion about the use of ice in the treatment of acute and chronic injuries. Therapists claim to use ice to decrease circulation in the treatment of an acute injury yet claim the opposite in the treatment of chronic injury. The confusion stems from the report by Lewis in 1930 of the 'hunting response' of the circulation to tissue cooling'. This, plus the easily observable reactive hyperaemia caused by cooling the skin, promoted the belief that the cooling of tissue caused the blood supply to decrease and then increase. Lewis concluded, from skin temperature measurements, that the blood flow continued to increase and decrease in a cyclical manner. These opinions continue to be quoted in spite of a paper subsequently published by Abramson2 and others which identified the cyclical response to cooling to occur at 60 per cent of the resting level of blood supply. Abramson concluded that the reduction in blood supply occurred in the underlying muscle. Cobbold and Lewis3 reported a similar reduction in blood flow following cooling of knee joints in dogs.

متن کاملEvaluation of chitosan gel on burn wound healing and keratinocytes function
Skin burns are common skin injuries that can result from exposure to various sources of heat by which, depending on the cause, different degrees of burns are generated. In restoration of superficial burns by re-epithelialization, the skin is rebuilt, but the skin color is different than the healthy tissue. Keratinocytes represent the major cells of the epidermis. These cells are sourced from ec...
متن کاملSurgical Removal of Neglected Soft Tissue Foreign Bodies by Needle-Guided Technique
Introduction: The phenomenon of neglected foreign bodies is a significant cause of morbidity in soft tissue injuries and may present to dermatologists as delayed wound healing, localized cellulitis and inflammation, abscess formation, or foreign body sensation. Localization and removal of neglected soft tissue foreign bodies (STFBs) is complex due to possible inflammation, indurations, granulat...

Background & Objective: Lipoma (a benign tumor composed of adipose tissue) is the most common benign mesenchymal tumors in soft tissue but it is very rare in the parotid gland. Case: We reported a 54 years old man with parotid gland lipoma. Parotid gland lipoma usually originates from the superficial lobe. Superficial parotidectomy has been considered as the choice method of the treatment. ...
